May 1st means May Day in Hawaii, and a number of celebrations were held around the Big Island. The Volcano Art Center hosted of its first annual "May Day is Lei Day" Festival.

May 1st means May Day in Hawaii, and a number of celebrations were held around the Big Island.

The Volcano Art Center hosted of its first annual “May Day is Lei Day” Festival.

The day kicked off with a sing-along of “May Day is Lei Day” lead by the Kani Le’a ma Kilauea ‘ukulele group.

The festival also featured a lei contest and silent auction, lei-making demonstrations, and hula.

The event is supported in part by a grant from the County of Hawaii Department of Research and Development and the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
