Ken Van Bergen, the Property Manager for Hawaii County, takes a moment during a recent open house meeting at the Paauilo Gym to explain the different county owned land parcels in Hamakua, and how they are being studied to see how the county can benefit from them.

The Kapulena agriculture park in the mauka lands near the midpoint of Waipio Valley and Honokaa, the infamous Paauilo lands considered for sale to plug a county budget gap, and the most recent 1,040 acre Koholalele parcel are all examined.

The meeting was sparsely attended by the public. Albert Kahiwahiwa o Kalani Haa, Jr, who has stood in opposition to the Hamakua land sale because he says the lands are not rightfully owned by the county, was in attendance, as was activist Shelley Stephens.
