(BIVN) – Heavy rain over portions of East Hawaiʻi prompted a Flood Advisory on Thursday afternoon.
The National Weather Service reported doppler radar indicated rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with the heaviest rain over the Hilo and Puna districts. Minor flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area, the forecasters said.
Some locations that will experience flooding included Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Kapaʻau, Honokaʻa, Honomū, Papaikou, Pepeʻekeo, Hakalau, Ninole, Laupahoehoe, Mountain View and Glenwood.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for the entire island of Hawaiʻi through Thursday afternoon.
From the National Weather Service in Honolulu:
A trough continues to lay over the eastern half of the state within a very moist and fairly unstable environment. Energy moving up from the southwest may initiate return periods of moderate to locally heavy rainfall. This rain has a high probability of focusing on Maui and Hawaii Counties. Locally moderate to heavy showers, with possible isolated thunderstorms, may produce short-lived intense rain rates through the day.
