Throngs gather on the rainy July 3rd Saturday to sample the BBQ by the Hilo Bay.
Local grill chefs brought their best stuff in four meat categories: chicken, pork ribs, pork, and beef brisket. Poke and chili contests were also held.
In this video, David Gafford, co-founder of the Hilo Bay BBQ Cook-off, talks about the genesis of what is now a signature Hilo Independence Day event, and discusses his plans for the future of BBQ on the Big Island.
