A Waimea man is in police custody for a shooting that sent his brother to the hospital.

At 3:19 a.m. Friday (May 13) South Kohala patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting at a home on Alaneo Street in Waimea. While en route, officers received additional information that a man was at North Hawai’i Community Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Responding officers made contact with the victim’s family at the house and learned that two of the residents, 22-year-old Eyn Chong, and his brother, 23-year-old Evan Chong, had been drinking with others in the garage when they got into an argument. Evan Chong reportedly left the garage and returned with a rifle. One shot discharged, hitting Eyn Chong in the lower left leg.

Before police arrived, the victim was taken to the hospital by private vehicle and the suspect left the area.

Police recovered a .30 caliber rifle at the scene.

At 6:40 a.m., Evan Chong returned to the house, where he turned himself in to police. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder. He is being held at the Kona police cellblock while detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section continue the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.
