HILO, Hawaii – Its a mess on Kilauea Avenue in Downtown Hilo near Wailoa Stream Bridge.

The County Department of Public Works says motorists should plan for a one-way, one-lane traffic pattern in the Puna direction starting at the Aupuni Street intersection and ending at the south end of the Bridge, all day until the end of this month. That’s from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The Aupuni Street / Kīlauea Avenue intersection is open for left turns from Aupuni Street on to Kīlauea Avenue for Puna bound motorists, but traffic is backing up on some of those surrounding streets as well. Yesterday, cars inched along on Kinoole Street, a north-south road parallel to Kilauea, in the vicinity of the project.

The county says right turns from Aupuni Street on to Kīlauea Avenue are also permitted.

Normal traffic patterns are restored after roadwork is completed for the day.
