STORY SUMMARY

Volunteers touch base with residents downslope of the approaching lava flow, including one man who would later make "berm-building" headlines.

(ABOVE VIDEO) Filmed by Lynn Beittel of Visionary Video in Pahoa on October 27 – the same day civil defense began their door to door notice of evacuation due to projected path of the June 27 lava flow.

INSIGHTS

Part three of our video series featuring the way of life for those in the path of the lava flow. This story features the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) as they go door-to-door in Pahoa, touching-base with residents downslope of the approaching lava flow. CERT volunteer Francesca Martin-Howe talks about the procedure the team follows when visiting homes in the threatened area, many of which have already been vacated. However, the team does make contact with one property owner: Alfred Lee, who would later go on to make national headlines for building a berm on his land to try to fend off the lava’s advance.
