The tide rushed over the breakwater at Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor, busting up the pier, and filling the road with sand and debris.

(Big Island Video News) KAWAIHAE, Hawaii – The high surf brought pounding waves to Kawaihae Harbor, where damages were filmed by Visionary Video on Thursday.

Early this morning at high tide, big waves rushed over the breakwater at Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor, busting up the pier, and filling the road with sand and debris.

The waves also washed away a 6 foot berm of sand, leaving trees high and dry.

The Kawaihae Canoe Club managed to carry canoes to higher ground at midnight before the 4 a.m. high tide. Now, the club will have to rebuild the lost berm to protect their hale and to save the trees, which could be undermined during the next high tide.

Harbor users said that the boats that usually moor in the small boat harbor were moved yesterday into the main part of the harbor over by the Matson dock.

West Hawaii shores are under a High Surf Warning effective until 6 p.m. Saturday.
