KOHALA COAST – The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Laurance S. Rockefeller’s famed Hawai‘i Island resort known as the Grand Dame of the Kohala Coast, kicked off its 50th birthday party this week.
Kahu Danny “Kaniela” Akaka, Jr. performed a traditional Hawaiian blessing, exactly 50 years after his uncle, Rev. Abraham Akaka, blessed the hotel at its opening on July 24, 1965.
The hotel began the day with a flower drop of 50,000 orchids along Kauna’oa Bay.
