Evacuations In Kawaihae Village, Flash Flood Warning Extended

KAWAIHAE – Residents in the Kawaihae Village area are being affected by flood conditions and have been evacuated, Hawaii County Civil Defense reports. An evacuation center has been opened at the Waimea Community Center.

Mara Paio sent Big Island Video News a snapshot of some of the flooding occurring in Anekona Estates this evening. Paio said no homes were damaged in the area but seven homes were cut off by the “pond”.

Civil Defense says Akoni Pule Highway is now closed at the Kawaihae Harbor area and North Kohala traffic is being detoured through the Kohala Ranch Subdivision.

Also closed: Apelehama Road near the Kalopa State Park, Kupuna Road or Old School Road in Ahualoa and Hualalai Road near Guava Road in Kailua Kona.

The county says all other major highways are open at this time however motorists are advised to drive carefully and to be prepared for possible ponding, runoff, and other hazardous conditions as well as unexpected road closures and traffic delays.

The National Weather Service says the Flash Flood Warning for Hawaii Island has been extended until 9 p.m.

AT 642 PM HST…RADAR SHOWED HEAVY RAIN NEAR KAWAIHAE AND PUUANAHULU. OTHER AREAS OF HEAVY RAIN WERE STILL LINGERING NEAR PAHALA AND WOOD VALLEY. THE AREAS OF HEAVY RAIN WERE NEARLY STATIONARY.

* OTHER LOCATIONS IN THE WARNING INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO POHAKULOA CAMP… MAUNA KEA SUMMIT… HONAUNAU… WAIPIO VALLEY… SADDLE ROAD JUNCTION… PUAKO… PEPEEKEO… PAAUILO… OOKALA… MOUNTAIN VIEW… LAUPAHOEHOE… KEAUHOU… KEALAKEKUA… KAMUELA… KAILUA-KONA… HONOKAA… HOLUALOA… HAWI… HAKALAU.. .GLENWOOD AND CAPTAIN COOK.
