PAHALA, Hawaii – In this video, part of the Ka’u Coffee Faces Uncertain Future series, Miss Ka’u Coffee Queen Maria Miranda tells the story of her parents – Roberta and Jose Miranda – who came from El Salvador to begin a life of farming coffee in Hawaii and who played a role in the success of Ka’u Coffee.

Maria Miranda

“In 2006 my father was able to establish his own coffee farm thanks to the early pioneers Moa’ula, and we are very grateful because I know that I can personally say Lori and Rusty and Francis and Trinidad and several others that were here before us came and took it upon themselves to find this place and cultivate it for the future generation. Being part of that future generation is exciting. It’s also – many times – very scary because we are unsure of the inevitable future.”Maria Miranda on Sept. 27, 2015
