HILO, Hawaii – County officials are hoping to address discarded tires and dump sites in the sprawling Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in order to reduce populations of potential dengue fever carrying mosquitoes.
Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator Darryl Oliveira said one HOVE resident has a thousand tires on his property alone, and is unable to handle the cleanup without assistance. Ka’u councilwoman Maile David said she went on a recent site visit to a dump site – also on private property – that could be an ideal mosquito habitat if not addressed.
Oliveira presented the latest information on the coordinated response to the dengue fever outbreak on the Big Island during a special meeting of the Hawaii County Council on Wednesday, March 2.
