STORY SUMMARY

KOHALA (BIVN) - Weather forecasters say locations in the Flood Advisory include but are not limited to Mahukona, Puako and Waikoloa Village.

UPDATE (9:15 p.m.) – Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250), between the 11 and 13 Mile Marker is experiencing flooding on the roadway. The road is currently open and motorists are urged to use caution.

KOHALA – A Flood Advisory is in effect for the leeward side of Kohala on Hawaii Island until 10 p.m. HST.

At 7:03 p.m., the National Weather Service said the rain gage at Kahua Ranch reported over an inch of rain in the past hour. Radar data indicated the area of heavy rain is nearly stationary.

Locations in the Flood Advisory include but are not limited to Mahukona, Puako and Waikoloa Village.

“Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding,” forecasters wrote in the advisory message. “Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.”
