STORY SUMMARY

HILO (BIVN) - The new gym in Ka'u will soon be renamed the Representative Robert N. Herkes Gymnasium and Shelter, if the county council passes Bill 252.

HILO, Hawaii – The new Ka’u gym and shelter in Pahala will soon bear the name of the local legislature who fought for its creation.

Bill 252 recognized the late Representative Robert N. Herkes by naming the gymnasium and shelter “Representative Robert N. Herkes Gymnasium and Shelter,” and adds it to the Parks and Recreation facility schedule. The measure was introduced by councilwoman Maile David.

Herkes wife Jo-Anna testified in favor of the bill in Hilo.

The Hawaii County Council heard emotional testimony Wednesday, November 2, on three different bills naming Big Island recreation facilities in honor of three departed local leaders. Along with Herkes’ gym, the Pahala ballfield will be named after Ka’u principal Laurence Capellas, and the Shipman Park soccer fields will be renamed to honor coach Justin Masayoshi “Buddy” Perry.

All three bills passed on first reading and will have one more council approval to go before adoption. Then its off to the mayor for his signature.

Mayor Billy Kenoi thanks the late Rep. Herkes for his work in making the Ka’u Gym & Shelter a reality in Pahala on Oct. 5, the day the new facility opened. Video by David Corrigan.
