STORY SUMMARY

HAWAII ISLAND (BIVN) - A High Wind Warning and a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa into Sunday.

HAWAII ISLAND – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and a High Wind Warning for Big Island summits above 11,000 feet into Sunday evening.

1 to 3 inches of snow and freezing drizzle is forecast for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

The road to the summit of Mauna Kea is closed to the public at the Visitor Information Station at an elevation of 9,200 feet due to high humidity, below freezing temperatures and icy roadways at the summit, rangers reported at 8:25 p.m. Saturday.

The summit of Mauna Loa is also closed beyond Red Hill Cabin due to high wind conditions, the National Park Service reports.

Southwest winds 45 mph to 60 mph, with gusts up to 80 mph, are possible. Forecasters say an approaching low is producing the high winds, requiring the High Wind Warning for the mountains.
