STORY SUMMARY

HAWAII ISLAND (BIVN) - The National Weather Service has extended the current High Surf Warning for the shores of North Kona, Kohala, Hamakua and Puna through tomorrow morning.

HAWAII ISLAND – Huge waves are rolling into Hilo Bay this morning, creating a number of closures.

The National Weather Service has extended the current High Surf Warning for the shores of North Kona, Kohala, Hamakua and Puna through tomorrow morning.

Due to the High Surf conditions, the Hawaii County Civil Defense agency announced the following closures:

  • Bayfront Highway
  • All Hilo Beach Parks
  • Coconut Island
  • Parking area near Mo’oheau Band Stand
  • Mahukona Wharf
  • Keokea Beach Park

Additional closures may be needed without notice, officials say.

“A High Surf Warning means there is a significant threat to life and property,” emergency officials stated today in an alert message. “Surf as high as 25 feet for north shores and 15 feet for east and west facing shores is forecasted. You are advised to exercise caution due to the unpredictability of huge swells and dangerous surf. Oceanfront residents and beachgoers along the affected shores are advised to be on the alert for possible high and dangerous surf which may lead to beach and road closures.”
