HAWAII ISLAND – High surf continues to impact north and east facing shores of Hawaii Island.
The National Weather Service extended the High Surf Warning through this evening for the shores of Kohala, Hamakua, Hilo and Puna. Surf as high as 25 feet for these shores is forecast, and could be “a significant threat to life and property,” officials say.
West facing shores are under a High Surf Advisory.
The following closures are in effect:
- Bayfront Highway
- All Hilo Beach Parks, including Coconut Island
- Laupahoehoe Boat Ramp
- Keokea Beach Park
“You are advised to exercise caution due to the unpredictability of huge swells and dangerous surf,” a Hawaii County Civil Defense message stated. “Oceanfront residents and beachgoers along the affected shores are advised to be on the alert for possible high and dangerous surf.”
Additional closures may occur without notice.
