STORY SUMMARY

PAPA‘IKOU, Hawaii - Customers from Maluna Place and north along Old Māmalahoa Highway and all side roads are now without water.

UPDATE – Repairs were completed at 5 p.m. to a water main break near Pāpaʻikou Gym, the Department of Water Supply said. Water service has been restored to customers from Maluna Place and north along Old Māmalahoa Highway. The 10% Water Conservation Notice for the Pāpaʻikou area is still in effect, due to ongoing repairs from Tropical Storm Lane, water supply officials say.

(BIVN) – A water main break near Pāpaʻikou Gym has forced the closure of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole Elementary and Intermediate School and cut water for customers in the area.

The Department of Water Supply (DWS) reports “Pāpaʻikou customers from Maluna Place and north along Old Māmalahoa Highway (also known as Scenic Road), and all side roads including but not limited to Kaapoko Homesteads and Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole Elementary and Intermediate School, will experience no water” while water supply personnel repair the water main break.

Repairs are estimated to be completed by this evening, officials say.

Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole Elementary and Intermediate School are closed until water services are restored, Hawai‘i County Civil Defense said.

The water department has installed a spigot for public access at the intersection of Old Māmalahoa Highway and Maluna Place.

On August 28, the county announced that inclement weather associated with Hurricane Lane “caused damage to portions of our Papaikou infrastructure, causing interruptions in water service.” The Department of Water Supply was hauling water to maintain water service. At that time, water officials requested Papa‘ikou customers reduce daily water usage by 10% in order to maintain service to all.
