(BIVN) – A Flood Advisory was issued Thursday morning for a section on windward Kaʻū, as a Flood Watch continues for the entire island of Hawaiʻi.
“At 6:06 a.m. HST, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain over the Kaʻū district from Nāʻālehu to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park,” the National Weather Services stated. “Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area.”
Rain was reported to be falling at a rate of 0.5 to 1 inch per hour.
Some locations that could experience flooding include Pāhala, Wood Valley, Punaluʻu Beach, Kawa Flats, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Nāʻālehu, Waiʻōhinu and Discovery Harbour.
Meanwhile, a Flood Watch remains in effect for the entire island – and state – of Hawaiʻi. Remnant moisture from former Tropical Storm Norbert is bringing periods of moderate to heavy showers to mainly windward sides of the Hawaiian Islands through late Thursday tonight, forecasters say.
“There is a slight chance of thunderstorms as well, which could produce briefly higher rain rates, increasing the risk of flash flooding,” the National Weather Service says.
