(BIVN) – Hurricane Nolo continues to move west away from Hawaiʻi island on Sunday morning. Officials say heavy rains, possible flooding conditions, and strong winds are expected to continue through today.
A High Wind Warning, Wind Advisory, and High Surf Advisory remain in effect for parts of Hawaiʻi Island through 6 p.m. tonight.
“Through the night episodes of heavy rain fell in the Kaʻū district and flooding has occurred in the Waiʻōhinu area near Kamaoa Road and Kaʻalaiki Road in Nāʻālehu,” the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense reported. “Flooding also occurred along Highway 11 in the areas of Honuapo and Kawa.”
Highway 11 remains closed in Waiʻōhinu from Pinao Street to Kaʻalualu Road.
Highway 11 also remains closed between Nāʻālehu and Pāhala due to flooding. Roadblocks are set at the Nāʻālehu Police Station and the Punaluʻu Road.
Also, Highway 250 (Kohala Mountain Road) remains closed due to high winds and hazardous conditions.
As more rain is anticipated in the Kaʻū area, the following shelters remain open at this time:
- Nāʻālehu Gym
- Robert Herkes Gym in Pāhala
- Ocean View Community Center
Due to the flooding on Highway 11 in Kaʻū, the following County of Hawaiʻi solid waste transfer stations will remain closed Sunday, September 27:
- Pāhala: 96-1250 Old Māmalahoa Highway.
- Wai‘ōhinu: 95-6155 Kaulia Road.
- Ocean View: 92-9017 Māmalahoa Highway.
Due to the High Winds, Hawaiian Electric says its Public Safety Power Shutoff program is in a watch condition, meaning that if weather conditions intensify in the next 24 hours, Hawaiian Electric may proactively shut off power in communities with high risk of wildfire.
