(BIVN) – State lawmakers recently honored the Hilo Lagoon Centre on its 55th anniversary.
On October 26, State Representative Sue Keohokapu-Lee Loy presented a certificate of recognition from the State House, commemorating the Lagoon Centre’s “longstanding place in Hilo’s history and cultural heritage.”
The commemoration was originally planned for September, but was canceled due to concerns over Hurricane Nola.

Present for the presentation were Hilo Lagoon Centre Building Manager Kelly Dewey, Board Member Allen Chinn, and Landscaping Committee Member K.T. Cannon-Eger.
Rep. Keohokapu-Lee Loy was given a tour of a display of the history of the building that was recently installed in the lobby.

From a Hilo Lagoon Centre news release:
Originally opened in 1971 as the Hilo Lagoon Hotel, the property became known for its gracious hospitality, distinctive mid-century architecture, tranquil lagoon setting, and Japanese garden roots. Over the decades, the hotel welcomed residents and visitors from throughout Hawaiʻi and beyond, including notable guests and performers such as John Wayne, Frank Sinatra Jr., and Melveen Leed.
Today, Hilo Lagoon Centre serves as a mixed-use residential and commercial facility, continuing to be a familiar landmark and an integral part of the community. The State House certificate recognizes the dedication of the Centre’s owners, staff, residents, and community partners in preserving its legacy while contributing to Hilo’s future.
The certificate states that Hilo Lagoon Centre remains “a cherished reminder of Hilo’s storied past and a meaningful part of its promising future,” honoring the area’s rich history and cultural heritage while contributing to the vitality, character, and welcoming spirit of the community for generations to come.
