STORY SUMMARY

HAWAIʻI - Two public events will explain a set of new immigrant justice laws in Hawaiʻi.

(BIVN) – The Due Process Roadshow is coming to Hawaiʻi island, with two events scheduled for the same day. The meetings will be a chance for the public to learn about Hawaii’s new immigrant justice laws.

The statewide Campaign for Immigrant Justice coalition is holding the two events in Hilo and Kona on Thursday, November 12th. The Due Process Roadshow is running through January, and bringing together the people who supported the “Six Laws, Real Aloha” immigration laws passed by the 2026 Hawaiʻi legislature, and later signed into law by Governor Josh Green. There will be presentations on the following:

  • Act 141, limiting local police cooperation with federal immigration enforcement;
  • Act 142, establishing statewide standards for U and T visa certifications for crime survivors;
  • Act 143, reducing the maximum sentence for nonviolent misdemeanors from 365 to 364 days;
  • Act 161, requiring notice of rights for people in state and county custody before any civil immigration interview;
  • Act 162, requiring protected community locations to adopt policies for responding to federal immigration enforcement; and
  • Act 179, establishing a language access education and workforce development program at the University of Hawai’i.

The Hawaiʻi island events set for Thursday, November 12th, will be held at the following locations:

  • Hilo: 12:30-1:30PM, St. Joseph’s Parish Rectory Room (behind the pink church), 43 Kapiolani St.
  • Kona: 4:30-6:30PM, West Hawai‘i Civic Center Building G.

Organizers say both events are free and open to everyone. The Hawaiʻi Coalition for Immigrant Rights (HCIR) is co-hosting the events with Hawai‘i County Council Member Jennifer Kagiwada, The Legal Clinic (TLC), the ACLU of Hawai‘i, A.L.O.H.A. Latinos Association, Kona Indivisible, and North Hawai’i Indivisible.
