Tom “Pohaku” Stone explains the art of crafting a papaholua, or Hawaiian lava slide sled, as done in the traditional manner. The lashing of the papaholua was one of the many cultural demonstrations at the La Ho`i Ho`i Ea event held at Kona Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park on Saturday.
The free event, held to commemorate the day that independence was restored to Hawaii from the British occupation in 1843, was an opportunity for practitioners, musicians and masters of Hawaiian arts to show their stuff.
The sled making demonstration was a significant exercise for the wahine of the national park, who said that it was historic for women to be working on the holua – which they believed to traditionally be men’s work. Pohaku, however, said histories suggest the women also played a big role in ancient holua. Pohaku also said that there was a lava slide at the Kaloko park which is set for restoration.
