(BIVN) – The second annual Kawamoto Classic Swimming Event is set to take place in Hilo this weekend, and Hawaiʻi youth ages 8 to 17 are invited to participate.
The free event will be held Saturday, September 26th, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium, located at 260 Kalanikoa Street.
The event is being hosted the Hawai‘i Police Department and the Hawai‘i Island Police Activities League (HI-PAL) in partnership with the Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division and USA Swimming.

The Kawamoto Classic is designed to introduce keiki to aquatic sports and promote water safety. Activities will include water polo demonstrations, diving instruction, and swimming techniques led by County of Hawai‘i Aquatics Lifeguards and community volunteers.
Registration opens at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. Walk-in participants are welcome, and forms will be available on site. A signed parent or guardian permission slip is required, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. A short swimming test will be administered to determine each participant’s skill level.
All participants should wear appropriate swimming attire and are encouraged to bring a light lunch or snack. Both beginners and non-swimmers are welcome.
