(BIVN) – Hawaiʻi County plans to resume normal operations on Sunday, as Hurricane Nolo moves away from the Big Island.
As of 11 p.m. Saturday night, Hurricane Nolo was located 200 miles south-southwest of South Point in Kaʻū, moving west at 9 mph.
The Tropical Storm Warning was cancelled Saturday, but a Flood Watch was expected to remain in place through the night.
As of Saturday evening, Kohala Mountain Road remained closed due to high winds and possible hazardous conditions. In Kaʻū, Highway 11 was closed in Waiʻōhinu from Pinao Street to Kaʻaluʻalu Road and between Nāʻālehu and Punalu’u due to flooding.
Shelters at Ocean View Community Center, Nāʻālehu Elementary School gym and Robert N. Herkes Gym in Pāhala remained open Saturday evening.
“We still could see rain and wind impacts through the weekend, so residents should remain cautious,” said Mayor Kimo Alameda in an evening news release. “Our first responders and partners remain ready to respond to any issues that may develop and we will continue to keep a close watch on this storm as it moves away from us. We appreciate our community for showing vigilance and thank our federal, state and nonprofit partners for their ongoing collaboration.”
County officials say all solid waste facilities, including transfer stations, are scheduled to resume their normal operations on Sunday. Also, all County parks – including the Hilo Municipal Golf Course and Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens – are scheduled to reopen.
Hele-On bus service is scheduled to resume for Routes 11, 40, 101, 201, 202, 204, and 401. Route 90 is scheduled to run at 5:40 a.m. from Pāhala and 2:45 p.m. from Kona. Hele-On’s Paratransit and shared ride taxi programs will resume regularly scheduled services.
