Residents had a chance to meet some unusual creatures this weekend.
These alpacas are living peacefully on a farm in Ahulaloa, which is a long way from their native habitat in South America.
Although Hawaii is generally too hot for the animals, owner Jenny Brundage says they are right at home at these higher, cooler elevations.
The public was invited to visit the herd as a part of National Alpaca Farm Days, promoted by the 4,000-member Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association as a way to educate the public about the animal.
The animals are related to camels and llamas, and are shorn for their soft hair, said to be warmer than sheep’s wool. The fiber fetches about $5 an ounce.
One of the highlights for visitors was the introduction of this unnamed cria, or baby alpaca, which was born only 5 days ago.

Yes, Michael, we had a huge response last year and are already planning to hold an open house this year for National Alpaca Farm Days.
Planning a family trip to see my son stationed in Hawaii. Had to investigate after my youngest joked “bet there are no alpaca farms in Hawaii”…..hmmmm. Enjoyed the read. My son is stationed in Oahu. I’m not familiar with the distance and travel between the different islands. Are you relatively close to Oahu.
