In the above video – filmed last Thursday, March 26 – Lanakila Mangauil talks about rushing to the defense of Mauna Kea the moment he heard heavy machinery was moving into place on Monday.

MAUNA KEA – As the Mauna Kea Acces Road blockade continues into a second week, we recount the efforts of Lanakila Mangauil to halt the billion dollar Thirty Meter Telescope project; an effort that began one week ago.
Mangauil is the same Hawaiian cultural practitioner who single-handedly delayed the groundbreaking ceremony for the TMT project on October 2014 until reinforcements arrived to stop the event.
Mangauil sprang into action last Monday, he says, after hearing that heavy machinery was being moved up the mountain. The machines will be preparing the site on the Northern Plateau of the summit area for the construction of the TMT. Mangauil has been a leading figure in the effort to protect the mountain from further development by the astronomy industry. He has also been using social media to rally the TMT opposition, documenting his efforts earlier this week with his cell phone and posting the video to Facebook.
Mangauil has spent some cold nights on the mountain, but his support has grown over the last week. The invigorated opposition instituted a kapu aloha on the access road, which prevented construction crews from making it to the TMT site on Monday. Things were quiet today (Tuesday). Reports from Mauna Kea say the construction crews stood down today. Police issued a warning to the group blocking the road that they must keep the access to the summit open, for everyone.
Big Island Video News will have new video and interviews from the Mauna Kea blockade later today.

Why not protest machine gunning sheep on the Mountain, instead of protesting science and astronomy? Why not embrace your culture but let it evolve at the same time?
I don’t think you do the young people any favors by stubbornly holding onto an era that has long past us by.
and you should go back to the mainland
Mauna Kea is home to the Hawaiian Native people, not the world’s largest telescope, we have two being constructed in chili, is that not enough? And is it not enough with 13 telescope…….. and very little maintenance as been done to those telescope already on Mauna Kea, and for your info we embrace our culture everyday, do you……..
Feral sheep are not from Hawaii, and are a serious threat to rare Hawaiian ecosystems so they need to be eradicated. There are enough telescopes already in place and it makes No sense to invest billions of dollars in exploring space when we are destroying the earth we live in. And bottom line, the TMT is not following the law, it’s illegal to build while still in court. Hawaiians have lost so much and they are trying to fight for literally the most sacred place in Hawaiian culture, and I hope they are successful in shutting down the TMT.
I hate it when you racist biggots assume anyone who opposes you is from the mainland. Im born and raised on this island and fully support the TMT, along with many people with Hawaiian blood. YOU should go back to the box you crawled out of….
I’d have to be from there to go back there. I’m born and raised here and I support TMT, science and the advancement of our civilization.
Are you joking? A serious threat? They eat grass, people hunt them for food. What’s the problem?
Clearly what’s going on is not illegal, you might not like it but that doesn’t make it illegal.
Hypocrite using facebook and video.
You do know the Hawaiians used stars to navigate right. I mean really
It is the height of arrogance for you to tell Hawaiians what their culture ought to look like and how it might best conform to your presuppositions.
It’s interesting that you think mark’s comment is the racist one and not the original comment, which cast a whole culture as “unevolved” and “stubborn” for not supporting TMT construction.
Unevolved and stubborn wernt used in the original comment. Your making assumptions and putting words in people’s mouths. The idea that hawaiians should “whimper softly to ourselves” or “all just shut up and continue to dance and serve mai-tais for the entertainment of our overlords” is an idea that came from your brain, not mine. I fully support the right to protest (which is a right given by the AMERICAN government, btw). But a very vocal minority shouldnt stop progress. Protest all you want, wave flags on the side of the road, object in court. But when that doesnt work, dont stand in the middle of the road because you didnt get your way.
They need to rectify things with the correct people. The US DID NOT “take” them, it” took them in” & there’s huge difference between the two. They were GIVEN by their own Royalty to the British. THEY are responsible for the killing of the culture. Then they dropped Hawaii like a hot potato.
And . Yes….you should be happy to dance & serve mai-tais. #1. it adds to the local economy& #2…it feeds your family. You’re lucky to have a job. Many many do not. Count your blessings…you COULD be picking macs or papaya instead. Sometimes I feel like people are going to be pissed off cuz the water is too wet around here.
Mahalo!
Thank you!
But they didn’t have to desecrate and destroy the mountain and drinking water to do it. Technology is not always progress. Destruction of nature is stupid. In the long run, we all suffer.
They are in the wrong courts. The solution lies in common law courts, not lower courts with NO jurisdiction
