HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK – A small explosive event at the summit of Kilauea volcano on Sunday afternoon was captured on camera.
The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says a portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu Crater wall collapsed at 1:20 p.m. today (May 3), impacting the lava lake and “triggering a small explosion of spatter and a robust particle-laden plume.”
“Fist-size clasts were deposited around the closed Halemaʻumaʻu visitor overlook,” scientists report. No one was reported injured.
The event was captured on various webcams stationed around the summit. USGS released those images on Sunday, including a video of the explosion.
when i was photographing the lava from my boat…the last 15 years…i had 7 of these catch my boat on fire….never did i see such a sight….VAMONOS….
What about the big picture? The management plan to be changed at volcano national park. When will it be known publicly? When it’s too late to vote or comment on the 500+ pages of change to happen to the management plan of the national park. They gave 2 months time to comment and the clock is ticking. Not even workers at the park heard of any changes in their management or they just say they don’t.
Last time I went to Kilauea in 93 there was a bench collapse..and my good friend and photographer Nagar went down in the explosion and vaporized.
Pele took him on the way to the Lord. Nagar was infatuated with her legend and went every full moon to photograph.
We went with all the gifts ..gin , oranges and tei leaves on our ankles .
