PAHALA, Hawaii – Hawaiian musician Keoki Kahumoku performed Hawaii ’78 on his ukulele before the untying of the maile lei for the Kaʻū District Gym and Shelter on Wednesday, as a crowd of government officials and
Kaʻū students sang along.

The Kaʻū District Gym and Shelter is a 43,300 square foot structure with three basketball and volleyball courts, a kitchen, offices, locker rooms, storage and meeting spaces. The facility will provide a safe haven for Kaʻū residents in the case of a natural disaster or compromised air quality.
