STORY SUMMARY

HILO, Hawaii - Once again, Big Island residents voiced their support for Bill 13, which will reduce the use of Styrofoam on the island.

(BIVN) – Numerous testifiers at Thursday’s Hawaii County Council meeting spoke up for Bill 13, which will prohibit food vendors from dispensing prepared food in disposable polystyrene food service ware.

The law will become effective on July 1, 2019, if passed.

Supporters ranged from concerned environmentalists, to biologists, to moms with their children. Many were the same people who have been testifying in support of different drafts of the same bill for months.

The council voted to pass Bill 13 on first reading with a 7 to 2 vote.
