A special meeting of the Puna Community Development Action Committee was held in Hilo to discuss amendments to the CDP, and to come up with Capitol Improvement Project requests to submit to the county council.
The amendments to the Puna CDP have been a hot topic at the action committee meetings. Aside from syntax corrections, the plan is wrestling with a number of other fundamental issues, like the proposal to develop “village centers” around the district.
Some community associations have objected to the proposed village center’s located in their subdivisions.
County Planner Larry Brown said the village centers serve a number of important purposes, like helping Puna’s residents to avoid having to drive for miles every time they need essential services.
Amendments to the CDP must still be approved by the Planning Director, Planning Commission and the County Council before the can be adopted.
