(BIVN) – AstroDay, held annually in Hilo, held its first event in Kona this weekend.
The science and astronomy education event, sponsored by the Maunakea Astronomy Outreach Committee (MKAOC), was held Saturday at the former Sports Authority space at Kona Commons.
West Hawaii residents had the chance to interact with representatives from the observatories on Maunakea and Haleakala, right in their own back yard. For 16 years,
Highlights of the free, family-oriented event included Starlab, “a portable planetarium provided by the Canada France Hawaii and Gemini observatories, solar viewing with experienced astronomers, robotic demos, educational games and toys, and many hands-on activities.”
“We are very excited to bring this fun and educational event for keiki and families to Kona,” said Nancy Sakamoto, General Manager of Kona Commons, in a media release. “Kona Commons is proud to host the scientists and educators that are volunteering their time for this wonderful program.”
