(BIVN) – The search for a missing female who was reportedly swept away in the waters of the Wailuku River continued on Saturday.
According to a fire department dispatch, a male party hiked up above a waterfall at Piʻihonua on Friday with a female companion. Both were swept downstream by fast rising waters. The man, said to be in his twenties, was able to make it to the riverbank but he lost contact with woman.
Battalion Chief Matthias Kusch provided details during an interview at the scene of the incident.
Rescue crews could not conduct an in-water search because of the extremely high flood waters, but they did search along the riverbank from above Piʻihonua bridge to Boiling Pots. A helicopter search was also conducted.
