Hula dedicated to departed Merrie Monarch co-founders and kumu

Na Mamo O Kaleinani graced the stage for the second performance at the opening Hoike night, and many of the dances – which ranged from ancient kahiko to modern ‘auana – were dedicated to the memories of Aunty Dottie Thompson and Uncle George Naope. Hilo’s late kumu hula Rae Fonseca was also honored.
The halau is from Shibukawa in Japan, and is under the direction of Seiko Kaleinaniikawekiu Okamoto. The group was invited to the Merrie Monarch after winning a competition held once every four years in Ikaho.
The halau’s showing exemplifies the strong connection between Hawaii and Japan that exists even in the hula culture.
Na Mamo O Kaleinani even brought along their own musicians for the show. The band included a vocalist, two guitars… and a piano.
