(BIVN) – Hawaii County Civil Defense reports the lava flow front #3 split into two flows, and both are entering the ocean in the vicinity of Mackenzie State Park.
Highway 137 has been crossed by lava and is closed from Kamaili Road to Pohoiki Road. Kamaili Road is closed to all through traffic.
Sulfur dioxide conditions have increased in the area, civil defense says.
At the new lava ocean entry, civil defense continues to warn of the laze hazard:
- Laze is formed when hot lava hits the ocean sending hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air.
- Health hazards of laze include lung, eye and skin irritation.
- Be aware that the laze plume travels with the wind and can change direction without warning.
