(BIVN) – A surge of lava from Fissure 8 in the lower East Rift Zone appeared to coincide with a Thursday summit collapse event, but reports from lava tour boats sow Pohoiki still stands.
“HVO field crews report fluctuations in the channel level with small overflows occurring in the upper portion of the channel continued overnight,” a Hawaii County Civil Defense message stated this morning. “As of yesterday’s overflight, the western margin of the flow near Pohoiki has not advanced significantly westward so the flow remains approximately 500 feet from the Pohoiki boat ramp in Isaac Hale Park.”
The surge appeared to reinvigorate the ocean entry in the area of the former Ahalanui Beach Park. The day before, the Fissure 8 channel appeared to be sluggish, compared to rushing river of lava that has come to characteristic the feature in previous days.
Civil defense says State Highways requests motorists on Highway 11 between mile marker 28 and 32 stay on the pavement and be alert for changing roadway conditions.
