(BIVN) – Hawaiʻi Congresswoman and presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard is proposing a National Lei Day.
In a May 1st email, the Tulsi 2020 campaign explained (to those who do not hail from Hawaiʻi) that “a lei is a flower garland, traditionally given as a gesture of unity and friendship. Lei Day has been celebrated annually in Hawaii since 1928.”
“Join me in sharing aloha—respect and love for others—by giving a lei to a loved one, neighbor, or friend,” Gabbard said.
The concept of a lei fits with Gabbard’s policy platform of ending U.S involvement in foreign wars.
“A lei symbolizes the peace and harmony our country and world so badly need,” Gabbard said. “It’s Lei Day in Hawaii—and as president, I’ll propose a national Lei Day to help unite our divided country.”
Gabbard, a Democrat, joins an already-crowded field of candidates challenging incumbent Republican Donald Trump for U.S. President.
