Part one of a two part series, sharing a lengthy presentation made during County Council hearing on geothermal development
PAHOA, Hawaii: Yesterday, we covered a special session of the Hawaii County Council, convened in Pahoa before a packed house to hold a hearing on geothermal energy.
With all the recent talk about harnessing the island’s geothermal resources to address our future energy needs, residents in Puna are clamoring to be heard. They say the current discussion has ignored them and history has been neglected.
At Tuesday’s hearing, opponents of geothermal had a chance to present their side of the story. The Pele Defense Fund was given over an hour of time at the start of the hearing to make their presentation. After the video Pele’s apeal was shown, Robert Petricci shared this power point presentation with the council members and the huge audience at the Pahoa High School cafeteria.
Petricci detailed the history of geothermal in the Puna area, starting with the HGPA Experimental Well, and then Ormat.
Then, Aurora Martinovitch talked about the health concerns.

We have been apart of the US for over 100 years and yet, native Hawaiians still are at the bottom of all the socio-economic stats. One of the main reasons for this is the steady alteration of their lands, lifestyle, and culture. What little they have left is once again under attack at Mauna Kea, Haleakala, and again Geo in Puna. Enough is enough and the Hawaiians have given up too much already. To keep Hawaii Hawaiian we must stop altering their culture, lands, and lifestyle for profit. No Geothermal!!

If we cannot take Hawaii as an example of the many reasons all Vincentians should STAND UP! against the introduction of the use of GEOTHERMAL Energy. Read I-Witness News statement submitted by St. Vincent’s Director of Energy Mr. Ellsworth Dacon. Am not trying to blow smoke in Mr. Dacon’s face, but he needs to take off those rose colored glasses through which he is looking at the cost and benefits of using geothermal in St. Vincent. The initial cost associated with harnessing geothermal energy here, far exceeds the cost of providing every citizen low cost solar panels systems to harness renewable energy. these funds can also be utilized to educate, inform and sensitize the public on how to decrease their reliance and use of fossil fuels and their by products. We need to be teaching conservation, preservation and restoration of our slowly eroding, once pristine environment. Instead of supporting this potential disastrous venture, the Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, ought to listen to the experiences of people who have actually lived in places where the cost of using geothermal energy greatly exceeds the need for it. There can be no economic growth through this plan, it will only become a burden to the taxpayers of the nation. Not to mention the detrimental impact geothermal will have on the lives of Vincentians. Comerade there are concerned citizens such as myself, who would like to see you take action toward making St. Vincent & the Grenadines a Green and Climate Compliant nation. Given the obvious high cost of introducing Geothermal here, I plead with you to reconsider your position. Don’t settle for short term gratification, with long term expenses. St. Vincent & the Grenadines I don’t know about anyone else, but I say NO!!!!!! to Geothermal in St. Vincent. #ZEROGEOTHERMAL
