The 30th Annual Cultural Festival at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park was held on Saturday on the front lawn of Kilauea Military Camp.
Entrance to the national park was free of charge and so was the festival. Thousands came out to see cultural demonstrations, play Hawaiian games, and try their hand at coconut and a lauhala weaving. Visitors also had the chance to make feather kahili, traditional lei, calabash, and quilt square.
Top Hawaiin music talent and halau also performed for the crowd.
The park says festival was originally held at the coast beneath the swaying palms of Kamoamoa, but when Pele’s lava overran the area in 1992, the festival moved to the summit of Kīlauea.
The festival was cosponsored by Hawaii Natural History Association, Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kīlauea Military Camp, and County of Hawaii Department of Research and Development and Hawaii Tourism Authority.
