Hawaii County Civil Defense message (Aug. 7 at 7:56 p.m.)

PAHOA, Hawaii – Hawaii County Civil Defense is reporting an uncontrolled hydrogen sulfide release at the Puna Geothermal Venture plant near Pohoiki. A Civil Defense alert is now in effect for Leilani Estates, Lani Puna Gardens, and Pohoiki Road.

In a message released by the emergency agency – which is already dealing with the imminent landfall of Hurricane Iselle – residents near the plant are being advised to stay indoors. Those who are experiencing discomfort or are otherwise concerned for their safety may evacuate to the Pahoa High School Gym, the message says.

Thus far, Puna seems to be getting the worst of the early stages of the storm. At the 8 p.m. hour, Hilo remains quiet, aside from the chorus of coqui frogs.

UPDATE: The Advisory issued for this geothermal release has been cancelled effective 10:15 p.m. According to Civil Defense. Residents who may have evacuated may return home at this time.
