After three days of hard work, Hawaii County officials and advocacy groups have created the template for a Pedestrian Safety Action Plan for Hawaii County.

The effort comes in the wake of another tragic pedestrian fatality on Hawaii Island. 79-year-old Tomiko Shimazu lost her life when she was struck in the crosswalk of Kinoole and Haili Street by a pick-up truck. No charges were filed in the incident.

Members of Mayor Billy Kenoi’s cabinet met with Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii and consultants over the course of three days to create a draft for the plan. Officials said the workshop had been planned months before the latest pedestrian death, but the incident emphasized the importance of the gathering. Lauren

Shimazu is survived by her three daughters, four grandchildren and her sister. She was laid to rest on Monday.
