At first it appeared to be a collision on Huina road in Kurtistown, but it has since turned into an attempted murder case.

Police charged 30-year old Kainoa Arakaki with attempted murder, assault and property damage after they were called to a reported ‘disturbance’ along the Puna roadway early Friday evening.

Police say they came upon a heavily damaged pickup truck, with the driver – a 60-year-old Kea’au man – pinned inside.

They stopped the driver of another truck as it was leaving the scene, and arrested Arakaki.

Both men received medical treatment. Rescue personel pulled the 60-year old man from his truck.  He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Arakaki was treated for injuries police say occurred prior to the crash.   Police do not report any motive or further details of what led to the conflict between the two men.
