Media release | Hawaii Senate Majority Caucus

Honolulu – On February 14, 2011 the State Senate unanimously confirmed Russell S. Kokubun as Chairperson to the Department of Agriculture.

Kokubun brings experience both as a farmer and as an elective official. After graduating from college, Kokubun worked as a farm laborer on the Island of Hawaii. In 1978, he purchased a vegetable farm that he still owns today.

Most recently, Kokubun served as the as the Senator for the 2 Senatorial District, representing the areas of Ka‘u, Puna, and Hilo on the Island of Hawaii. During his time in the senate, Kokubun held a leadership role as senate vice president. He also served on several committees, playing a key role in addressing issues relating to water use, zoning of land, and food security.
