The Hilo Bayfront Trails Project has gotten the endorsement of the Windward Planning Commission.

The planned shoreline sidewalks, trails and bike lane improvements between the Hilo Harbor and the Wailuku River needed a special management area permit to begin work.

The $16 million dollar project is being made possible by a grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority as well as matching county resources.

There is still a lot of work to be done – like securing easements and further approvals – before the bayfront trails are a reality.
