KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii: Banyan’s in Kona, the legendary surf spot favored by visiting professionals as well as locals, has been named the top priority for acquisition by the Public Access, Open Space and Natural Resources Preservation Commission.

The condo association that owns the heavily-used location is reportedly in support of selling the parcel to the county. The relatively small beach is only 10,000 square feet.

The county has already committed to increasing the available parking spaces at the beach, which gets pretty crowded when the surfs up.

Aside from Hawaii Island Surfing Association contests, Banyans is the location of the annual Keiki Surf Classic, put on by big wave superstar Shane Dorian… and a few of his friends.

The priority list will be presented to Mayor Billy Kenoi in an annual report, and after council approval, negotiations to purchase the parcels, in the order in which they are prioritized, will begin.
