NEWS BRIEF

  • The search continues for a missing 13-year-old boy in the vicinity of Hapuna Beach Park. The Coast Guard reports the boy went missing while cliff jumping with friends on Sunday. The boy reportedly jumped from a 15-foot cliff and then never resurfaced.
  • The Hawaii County Fire Department and Coast Guard cooperated with a search of the nearshore areas of Hapuna beach and adjacent shoreline.
  • The county search will continue tomorrow. The Coast Guard has suspended its active search but will continue to provide interagency support to the Hawaii Fire Department. The Coast Guard covered approximately 219 square miles before suspending efforts at sunset Monday. “The decision to suspend our active search efforts is always difficult and was not made lightly,” said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, commanding officer for Coast Guard Sector Honolulu, in a media release.
