STORY SUMMARY

Today, on the five year anniversary of March 11, 2011, we will be looking back at the stories we have produced examining the impacts the tsunami had on West Hawaii.

Video from MARCH 14, 2011 produced by Dave Corrigan, some video by Visionary Video, voice of Stephanie Salazar.

Just before 8 p.m. on March 10, Hawaii watched in horror as images of complete destruction in Japan were broadcast live on television. It was already March 11 in Japan when a Magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off Honshu, unleashing a giant tsunami across the Pacific Ocean.

Big Island Video News covered the events on Hawaii Island overnight, and the next day our colleagues at Visionary Video provided some of the first images of the destruction that washed ashore in South Kona and Kailua Village.

FIRST REPORT: March 11, 2011

Video from MARCH 11, 2011 produced by Dave Corrigan, voice of Stephanie Salazar. Filmed in Hilo, this story produced first thing in the morning, before we learned how extensive the damage was in Kona.
