County Councilmember Dennis “Fresh” Onishi (D) will run for Hilo’s State Senate seat.

HAWAII ISLAND – The Big Island now knows exactly who is running for state and county office.

Tuesday, June 7, was the deadline for political candidates to get on the 2016 election ballot. Candidates had until 4:30 p.m. to file nomination papers.

The day of the deadline brought a few surprises. For example, outgoing Hawaii County Councilman Dennis “Fresh” Onishi became a last-minute entry into the State Senate District 1 race. The Hilo senate seat was vacated when Sen. Gil Kahele passed away at the start of the year. Gil’s son, Kaiali’i, was appointed to fill the position and now has one legislative session under his belt. A third Democrat, Kaloa Robinsion, is running for the seat. Libertarian Kimberly Arianoff is also a candidate.

A massive 13 candidates are running for the job of Hawaii County Mayor.

All Hawaii Island offices are contested with the exception of one: The Hawaii County Council seat for Hamakua. Incumbent Valerie Poindexter will return to her first district seat unopposed.
