Pahoa Schools Close Due To High Sulfur Dioxide

PAHOA, Hawaii - Due to elevated sulfur dioxide (S02) levels, Pahoa High, Intermediate, and Elementary School Complex, Keonepoko Elementary, Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science, Volcano School of Arts and Science will be closed.

(BIVN) – The eruption of Kilauea volcano at the summit and along the lower East Rift Zone continues, and today, gas emissions have shut down area schools.

“Due to elevated sulfur dioxide (S02) levels, Pahoa High, Intermediate, and Elementary School Complex, Keonepoko Elementary, Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science, Volcano School of Arts and Science will be closed,” Hawaii County Civil Defense said.

UPDATE (8:15 a.m.) – Kindergarten to 4th grade classes are cancelled today at Ke Kula ʻO Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu iki also due to elevated sulfur dioxide levels.

UPDATE (9:30 p.m.) – Nā Wai Ola Public Charter School is also closed.

County, State and Federal partners continue to monitor the situation.
