UPDATE: Hawaii County Fire is reporting heavy smoke blowing into Waikoloa Village. “We ask people to monitor air conditions and if you have respiratory issues please take necessary precautions,” a civil defense message stated. “Hawaii County Fire is on scene and maintaining control of the fire. Please stay informed for further updates regarding the Waikoloa Fire.”

Route 190, Mamalahoa Highway, is now open to traffic in both directions, police say. It was closed earlier between Old Saddle Road and Daniel K. Inouye Memorial Highway due to the brush fire. However, Waikoloa Road remains closed between Route 190 and Paniolo Avenue due to the fire.

(BIVN) – A brush fire has closed portions of Highway 190, or Mamalahoa Highway, and Waikoloa Road. Hawaii County Civil Defense issued this message at 3 p.m. on Wednesday:

The Hawaii Fire Department reports a brush fire on Highway 190. Highway 190 between the old Saddle Road and Daniel K. Inouye junctions, and Waikoloa Road between Waikoloa Village and Highway 190, are closed to traffic until further notice. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes.

An hour before the civil defense message, police reported Highway 190 was closed between the 7 mile marker and Waikoloa Road due to the brush fire. “The Hawaii Fire Department is on scene, fighting the fire,” police reported. “The estimated duration of the road closure is not known at this time.”
